Departments – Sub FTP Site Administration

Manage DepartmentsNow, with Manage Departments and User and Workspace edits, you can effectively create multiple “sub FTP sites” within your FTP Today site. This is an extremely powerful and unique feature in our industry.

Department ManagerThere is also a new class of
sub-site administrator called a Department Manager
.

A Department Manager can log in to Site Admin and can add, edit or delete both Users and Workspaces, but only within their Department. Their visibility in the control panel will be completely limited to one Department. Any Reports or other screens accessible to a Department Manager will be content-filtered to include only departmental data.

Users and Workspaces can belong to one Department (for management by a Department Manager), however Users can also be assigned access to other Workspaces outside the Department (by a full Site Administrator).

Workspaces and Users in existance before this feature was rolled out are, as before, not members of any Department. There is no requirement to assign a Department, but you can do so via User-Edit or Workspace-Edit.

From an FTP client perspective, Users will still only see their assigned Workspaces and can still have limited permissions within each Workspace. A Department Manager will be given full rights to every Workspace in the Department.

iPad / iPhone Web App released

It is now easy to add FTP Today Site Admin to your iOS device.

  1. Browse to your FTP Today Site Admin URL in Safari on your iOS device.
  2. Tap the Action button then tap Add to Home Screen.
  3. Tap the Add button. This puts the FTP Today SA icon on your home screen.

You can then launch Site Admin directly from the FTP Today SA icon on your iPad or iPhone’s Home Screen. FTP Today SA launches in full screen web app mode.

Please note that this is not a native iPhone App; it is a web app.
A web app uses the Safari browser. This web app is therefore
not sensitive to the screen size of an iPhone.

We are planning on developing a true iPhone App in 2012 that
will be custom designed for the mobile phone screen size.

New Report – Disk Usage by Folder/File

On the Reports tab you will now find a new report “Disk Usage by Folder/File“. This report can be run in alphabetical order or by size (largest folder first). The latter sort method is the reason we developed this report in the first place, so you could instantly see what folders and files are occupying the largest portions of your storage limit.

Enable/Disable FTP, FTPeS, FTPS, SFTP and HTTPS at will!

FTP Today is proud to announce a powerful new feature — Advanced Protocol Controls.

Site administrators can now decide for yourself which protocols are enabled for file transfer, including FTP, FTPeS, FTPS, SFTP, HTTP and HTTPS. This gives you the power to enforce encryption (for example, by turning off FTP and turning on Explicit FTPS). Also, enabling only the protocols that you currently use provides added security by protecting the server from unwanted connection attempts on open ports.

Please note that we have not changed the way your FTP site functions, but you may still wish to disable some protocols that were formerly enabled simply because they came with your hosting plan.

Next time you log in to your FTP Today site administration system, visit the ‘Site Settings’ section. Use the ‘Change Site Settings’ icon to turn each protocol on or off at the site level. We have a knowledge base article on this topic posted here: http://support.ftptoday.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=92

Encryption at Rest now available to Enterprise customers

Enterprise customers can now opt for encrypted data at rest. This feature is currently only available to Enteprise hosting plans, and at an added cost. Contact sales for more information.

Data-at-rest (DaR) encryption is transparent to all end users and happens on the fly with all uploads and downloads. The feature uses an encrypted file system and at no point during the process of uploading a file is any temporary unencrypted copy stored on our server hard drives. Beware of other implementations that involve “post upload encryption” via a script.

Even though FTP Today’s privacy policy assures that no technical staff will view or open any of your files (unless expressly directed to by you), the DaR feature provides added assurance that no one with command line access can view unencrypted data.

Metrics Reports now available

16 new “metrics” reports are now available on the Reports tab. These reports track various things over time, such as disk usage, traffic, logins, files transfered, and much more.

Each report allows you to choose the historical timeframe by which to render the graph of the particular metric — by Month (view of most recent year), by Day (view of most recent month), by Hour (view of most recent day), and so on.
