Security Questions |
| Q. |
Can one user see another user's files? |
| A. |
No. This is what private ftp accounts and
FTP Today are
all about!
By default, each username/password is jailed to their own
home directory.
Exception #1 - If you want to share files among multiple users,
you can simply tell them to login with the same username/password.
Exception #2 - It is possible to "nest" home directories and
thereby create a "parent" type account that can get to multiple
users' files and folders ("children").
Exception #3 - The Site Administrator account is also a Master
FTP account, with full access to all files and folders.

|
| Q. |
Does FTP Today have SAS-70 certification? |
| A. |
FTP Today's
data center partner has successfully completed a SAS-70 Type
II audit, an internationally recognized auditing standard
developed by the American Institute of Certified Public
Accountants (AICPA). Performed by a major public accounting
and auditing firm, the SAS-70 is an independent report on
the design of our data center partner’s business
processes.
The SAS 70 Type II report shows that FTP Today's
description of certain relevant controls over information
technology related to its San Francisco data center and
hosting operations is fairly presented and that such
controls have been suitably designed to achieve their
specified control objectives.
We do not believe that any of our
direct competitors can make the above claims, making
FTP Today
your only choice for full,
piece-of-mind security.
|
| Q. |
Do you allow anonymous FTP? |
| A. |
FTP Today does not
typically allow anonymous FTP for security and
bandwidth reasons. Please read our
Acceptable Use Policy.
We can offer you a
dedicated server
with anonymous FTP enabled, but in this case you will not receive
unlimited bandwidth. Bandwidth costs money and anonymous FTP
typically uses lots of bandwidth. You should not
expect to find "unlimited anonymous FTP" from any provider.
We have made a few rare exceptions on our
shared-server accounts however, if
we accept your account with anonymous functionality, we will
certainly charge you a higher fee and will limit your
anonymous bandwidth usage.
|
| Q. |
How many levels of users and groups can I have? |
| A. |
The system starts with 2 types of users and it is best to stick to
this simple system:
- Site Administrator - one master user with full access
to everything
- End User - a user with a private "home directory"
Group Administrator Accounts It is possible to create a middle-level user that will have access
to other end-user home directories without jeopardizing the privacy
of each end user from one another. Some may refer to this as a
group of users with a "group admin" account. Think of this as
"nested" folders belonging to different users.
Common Folder Sharing Sharing the same files among several end users is possible when you
give multiple people a common user id and password with which to log
in, such as "projectX". It is not a problem to have more than
one person simultaneously login with the same user id.

Quality of Service Questions |
| Q. |
What is Unlimited Bandwidth or Unlimited Transfer? |
| A. |
Transfer and bandwidth are actually two different terms, though
many times the terms are mistakenly used interchangeably. In
reality, Transfer = Bandwidth Usage.
Transfer is the quantity of
bytes per month your FTP site uploads and downloads.
Unlike most hosting services that limit monthly transfer or
bandwidth usage, charging you extra when you go over a set limit,
with
FTP Today
your monthly transfer is UNLIMITED.
Bandwidth is the speed of transfer, or how many
bits per second the server can send and receive. In other words, it is
the "size of the pipe" or the maximum rate of flow. Each FTP Today
server is connected to a Cisco switch via 100 Mbps of bandwidth.
Since most users have DSL or Cable at their end, what that means is
that your
FTP Today
FTP site can handle many simultaneous high-speed transfers!
|
| Q. |
At what speed can I expect to be able to upload or download files? |
| A. |
That depends entirely on the speed of your Internet
connection. Those with broadband connections like DSL,
cable and T1 will be able
to upload or download much faster than those with 56K modem
connections. With a good connection, a 10MB file should
take less than a minute to download.
Also, keep in mind that most DSL and cable companies limit your
upload bandwidth significantly, compared to your download bandwidth,
so uploads may take longer than downloads.
Your
FTP Today
site will be able to handle
multiple simultaneous connections from high-speed users and keep up
with them all.
|
| Q. |
How fast and reliable of the FTP Today network? |
| A. |
Using BGP4 routing protocol,
FTP Today's network allows your data
to travel over the optimal path to reach its destination. This is
done through utilizing direct connections to several leading
Internet backbone providers. The result is a solid, secure and fast
FIBER OPTIC connection between your FTP site and your customers.
What does all this mean for your business?
FTP Today's
state-of-the-art network delivers faster and
more reliable service. And our commitment to adopting the best
technologies available means that we'll continue to provide
unbeatable speed and reliability.
|
| Q. |
Can I exceed my storage limit? |
| A. |
In order to proactively notify you of near-limit conditions, our
systems will automatically e-mail the address of your choice whenever
you reach 90% of your storage quota and again at 100% of storage
quota. Our servers allow you to go up to 120% of your storage quota.
At that point you must delete enough files to bring the account
below 100% or contact us for a quick upgrade.
Because of our advanced system management software, we can
allocate you more space in just a few seconds, and can do so without
taking your FTP site offline!
|
| Q. |
How do I administer FTP user accounts? |
| A. |
FTP Today gives you full remote site management capabilities (details).
Log in to your secure Site Admin URL and you can add, change, delete
users, and much more.
|
| Q. |
Why should I choose FTP Today to be my FTP host? |
| A. |
FTP Today has the most advanced systems, management and security
of any company in our industry. Click

|
| Q. |
Why is FTP Today FTP hosting better than hosting my own server
in-house? |
| A. |
Here are just a few reasons:
-
FTP Today's servers are accessible through redundant
connections to the Internet, whereas your own server would
likely have a single point of failure.
- There are significant costs associated with managing your
own server, including the ISP cost for a dedicated Internet
circuit (usually $600 per month and up for a 1.5 Mbps T1 circuit, or twice that for
redundant connections) and the necessity to devote hardware and
personnel to managing that server. Compare this to the
small costs of FTP Today.
- FTP sites generally take up lots of bandwidth, so if your
single internet connection is bogged down with file transfers,
your transfer rates may suffer. Your other use of your internet
connection (for browsing and e-mail) would also suffer from this
bottleneck.
- Putting a server on your own network potentially opens your
entire network up to security issues, hacker attacks, etc.
|
| Q. |
Does FTP Today have 24-hour support? |
| A. |
For emergencies, Yes. We have an
after hours pager system for emergency contact. For normal
support (non-emergencies), we offer 24X365 online support
(knowledgebase and ticket system)
and telephone support during business hours. Please note
that the emergency pager system is not to be used just
because you have something you consider urgent to discuss
with support; it is only to be used if your site in
completely non-responsive and appears to be down.

| Q. |
What is VDS technology and why is this better? |
| A. |
FTP Today's Virtual Dedicated Server (VDS) Technology
fundamentally gives you your own UNIX environment. “VDS Hosting”
allows each FTP site to operate independently from all other FTP
sites on the same physical machine. Within a physical machine,
Virtual Dedicated Servers have their own server software that runs
inside an isolated file directory and provides autonomy for each FTP
site. Security within a VDS environment is unparalleled to that of
the “Virtual Hosting” environment. Click
here for more details.

Technical Pre-Sales Questions |
| Q. |
Can I use my own domain name? |
| A. |
Yes. We will give your site a dedicated, fixed IP
address. Your DNS provider, usually your web and e-mail
hosting company, will simply point the new host name to this
IP address,
for example:
ftp.mydomain.com
or
myftp.mydomain.com
We can also register and host your domain's DNS for additional
registrar fees of $25 per year. Or, we can host your website, e-mail and ftp
site for additional website hosting fees. Discounts will also be provided
for combining website and ftp hosting.
All accounts also include an FTP Today.com hostname, such as:
mycompany.FTP Today.com
|
| Q. |
Will my users need any FTP software? |
| A. |
Not with
FTP Today. We install a special browser-based Java
FTP client on your FTP site at no extra charge. We also
offer optional encryption or a custom look to the Java
client for small additional fees.
|
| Q. |
Is FTP Today compatible with other FTP software? |
| A. |
Yes.
FTP Today
is compatible with every third-party FTP client
software, such as WS_FTP, CuteFTP or Fetch. We also offer
optional encryption support for software that supports FTPS (SSL).
|
| Q. |
Can the FTP Today browser-based FTP client be customized? |
| A. |
Yes. For an add-on fee of only $5 per month, we will give you
a completely customizable version of our Java applet. This
will remove our
FTP Today banner and allow you to replace it with
your own logo. You can also customize many features of the
Java applet itself, including colors and buttons. We will put you
on the fast track by adding your logo and color scheming the applet
right after you sign up for the $5 option. You can further
customize it yourself, or use any competent HTML designer.
See some examples here.
|
| Q. |
Can I send the same file to more than one person? |
| A. |
Yes. With FTP you place a copy
of your file on the server and allow anyone you want to retrieve it
(assuming you give them the username and password). You can leave
a file on the FTP server as long as you want. Just keep in
mind that we do limit your storage so as not to encourage laziness
in deleting files that you no longer need online. |
| Q. |
How many simultaneous connections can my users have? |
| A. |
Unlike some competitors that limit you to one login at a time,
FTP Today gives you the ability for
unlimited users to be logged in
simultaneously. You can even have lots of people logged in
with the same username at the same time. See our
plan details. Some
FTP client software can also connect over multiple "threads".
This is the same as logging several times with the same username and
sending several files at the same time. FTP Today allows
multi-threading. See our plan details.
And the best part is that our servers and
network are so fast that we can handle many simultaneous high-speed
connections or threads without slowing anybody down!
|
| Q. |
What is FTP? |
| A. |
FTP (File
Transfer Protocol) is the simplest and most secure
way to exchange files over the Internet. The most common use
for FTP is to 'download' files from the Internet, most typically
software. FTP also allows uploads.
|
| Q. |
What is an FTP site? |
| A. |
An FTP site is a place on the Internet to store files for
delivery to other persons. One person uploads (copies) the
files to the FTP site, then the other person downloads (copies) the
files from the FTP site. Either person can then delete the
files from the FTP site.
|
| Q. |
What is the difference between FTP and HTTP? |
| A. |
[Excerpted and edited from "The Answer Geek" (no longer published)]
The Cadillac of File Transfers FTP, unlike its distant cousin HTTP, is a protocol from “the old
days” of the Internet, that has some snappy features under the hood
worth investigating. FTP, originally written in 1971 and revised
several times before its current incarnation was decided in 1985,
was designed for transferring files between computers over the
Internet. FTP not only allows for file downloads, but also file
uploads, deletions, file directory manipulations and more. It is
much faster than asking someone to send the file as an e-mail
attachment.
FTP was designed with security in mind and requires a password
for access. However, it also allows for guest logins to public
areas. These areas are set up by site administrators and generally
contain software and other public information. This guest
access is typically what you would use with your Web browser. Guest
access is also called "Anonymous FTP" and is not permitted at
FTP Today (see above). If you click on a
hyperlink that begins with ‘FTP://’ you are most likely being
directed to the guest area of an FTP server. FTP works great for
this and provides nearly instant gratification.
Aside from the cool features of FTP, it is generally thought of
as a more efficient protocol than HTTP. This means that larger files
are transported more quickly with FTP—something all of us surfers
really appreciate. This efficiency comes with a price (doesn’t this
always happen?) because FTP servers are usually more difficult to
set up correctly than HTTP servers.
Depends on What You’re Looking For So, which one should you use if you are setting up a download area
on your Web site? It depends. If you are offering smaller files
(under 1.5MB) and don’t need to be bothered with file access
security, then HTTP is for you. If your files are large, you need to
administer your downloadable files from a remote location, or you
have to take advantage of access security, FTP is your best choice.
|
| Q. |
If FTP is so great, why isn't everybody using it? |
| A. |
Actually, almost everybody does use FTP, they just don't know it.
Many of the large files (images, programs, etc.) people download
from the Internet actually come from what are called "FTP servers".
FTP Today gives you that same capability, but better. From your
customers' perspective, you are delivering files the same way large
technology companies deliver software and other files over the
Internet. So, FTP Today is not only fast and inexpensive, it also
enhances your credibility.

Billing
Questions |
| Q. |
Does FTP Today require credit cards? |
| A. |
For monthly accounts, yes. For annual prepaid accounts we
also prefer credit card, but we will also accept purchase order / check or
money order. New accounts requesting annual invoicing will
have to put a minimum of one month on their credit card if they
require same day setup.
|
| Q. |
Does FTP Today send me an invoice and credit card receipt? |
| A. |
You will receive both an e-mail invoice and an e-mail credit card
receipt on every billing cycle anniversary, whether monthly or
annually. You will also be able to login to our secure online
billing system and view or print full page invoices, review billing
history, update your credit card, and more.
|
| Q. |
Are prices in U.S. Dollars? |
| A. |
Yes, all charges are in U.S. Dollars. Your credit card bank will receive
charges in US Dollars and convert to other international currencies
at prevailing rates.
|
| Q. |
Do you offer temporary FTP hosting? |
| A. |
No, but you can sign up and then cancel before the next
renewal.
|
| Q. |
What is the minimum contract period? |
| A. |
One Month, assuming you signed up for Monthly service. All sites will be automatically renewed until we receive notice
of cancellation.
Please note that we do not take advance orders for cancellation
such as "terminate my account at the end of the month". Your
account will be terminated immediately on the day you give notice.
We accept notice to cancel within as little time as the SAME DAY you
are charged for renewal, and we can void that day's charge if notified the
same day.
|
| Q. |
Are there any setup fees? |
| A. |
There are no setup fees, except if you order the FTPS
(SSL) add-on or if you order a dedicated server.
|
| Q. |
Are there any upgrade fees? |
| A. |
Monthly upgrades are available for only the difference in
price from one plan to the next, however the full difference is due
even when upgrading in the middle of a monthly billing cycle.
Annual upgrades are handled differently. First, a
pro-rata credit is placed on your account for the remainder of the
previous billing cycle. Then a new 12-month billing cycle is
invoiced on the day of the upgrade, less the applied credit.
Thus your next annual renewal date is now also later.
|
| Q. |
Can I get a refund if I prepay for a year and terminate early? |
| A. |
No. By prepaying yearly you are
getting a plan twice the size for the same cost when paid
monthly. This amounts to savings of up to 45%.
There are no refunds for terminating early, except when
upgrading to a new yearly plan. |
